Language Learner Development & Project Based Learning
Plenary and Workshop Resources
Assessment in PBL
During the PD day we will look at assessment in PBL. These four videos provide more information about how we assess individuals participants in a team activity.
This video provides an overview of the ways in which learners are assessed during the PBL component.
|
This video describes how we use a tracking booklet to record the progress of individual participants. It shows how the various assessed components are recorded. |
This video shows how we use an MS Excel version of the tracking booklet to help track the learners' progress for assessment. |
This video continues where part one left off. This video focuses on how the overall grades are calculated. We have created a spreadsheet for this but it could also be done by hand. |
Tracking Skills
The learning and development of hard and soft skills is an essential part of PBL. This video describes the use of a document to help track the learning and development of these skills.

You can download the Skills and Attitudes tracking documents below.

Online Resources
Visit our two symbaloo pages with links to information about PBL and Mindsets & Lifelong Learning.
Two excellent sites for up-to-date PBL information are BIE (The Buck Institute for Education) and Edutopia. BIE focusses solely on promoting PBL. Both sites focus on PBL in the K12 USA context but much of the information is still highly relevant.
Thom Markham has a website dedicated to PBL including resources and has a 'how to' publication - Project based learning: Design and coaching guide—expert tools for innovation and inquiry for k–12 educators.

A Guide to Using Problem Based Learning in Second Life
Web Site Quiz
Project Based Learning in the School of Languages extends over a semester of learning. It is complex, challenging and requires hard work. We will be presenting the PBL strand during the Professional Development day but would encourage you to find out more about the project before you arrive.
This page is part of the website which provides information about our PBL project to both learners and teachers. Please feel free to take some time to investigate the site. As an extra incentive we have a PBL quiz. Click on the link below to find six questions about the website. The answers you have may not be the ones we had in mind but this is not important - in PBL we value creativity and originality. Bring your completed answer sheet on the PD day and you will be entered into a draw for one of our special prizes. |
